Welcome to Kealing! We are so excited you are going to be part of our community.

Every Kealing student has an English summer reading assignment. As sixth graders, your English teachers ask that you read as much as you can, but you will receive a grade for reading three books over the summer and writing some information about each one. We suggest you aim to read one in June, one in July and one in August. Here are the specifics:

Read three books you have not previously read. Please choose three fiction books by different authors for this assignment. While we do want you to read as many different types of books as possible, fiction books will work best for the writing part of this assignment. Choose three books that interest and challenge you. Make sure you are not reading three books in a series. See the next page for more support in choosing books.
Write one separate paragraph for each book. You may choose which book to use for the following topics, but you must write about each topic once, not for each book. One topic for one book! You may type or write the paragraphs by hand. Make sure your first and last name are in the upper right hand corner of the page. The title of the book and author’s name should be the first line of the paper (Don’t forget to underline or italicize the title!) and write the topic you are addressing.

- - Protagonist – Choose one book and write about its main character, or protagonist. Write about the character's strengths and weaknesses and how those helped and hurt him/her/them in the plot.

- - Setting – Choose one scene from one book and write about the setting. Write one paragraph that describes when and where the scene took place and why the setting was important.

- - Conflict – Choose one book and write about the main conflict. Write one paragraph about the type of conflict the protagonist faced (conflict with another character, conflict with nature or conflict within him/herself/themselves) and one way the protagonist faced the conflict.

3. Keep your paragraphs in a safe place and don’t forget to bring them with you to school in August!
